10 Inexpensive Summer Activities

With students (and teachers) counting down the days to summer vacation, it’s easy to daydream about all the great things you and your friends will do. That is, until you’re five days into Summer vacation and you realize that your plans of backpacking through Europe are a little bit above you and your friends’ paygrade.

So, here is a list of inexpensive activities you and your friends can do throughout the Summer:
1. Go swimming. Even if you don’t have access to a pool, a membership to the local YMCA allows you and your friends to swim as much as you want!
2. Read a book. Summer reading can be boring, but if you pick a book that peaks your interest, then your Summer can be filled with intrigue!
3. Apply for a part-time job. Although working may not be the most fun way to spend one’s days, the amount of money you earn can allow you do so much with your free time!

4. See a movie. With blockbuster hits like Spider-man: Homecoming, Despicable Me 3, and Wonder Woman hitting theaters, it’s easy to make a night out of watching a movie with your friends!

5. Take on a new hobby! Whether it be learning how to knit or growing a vegetable garden in your backyard, a new hobby can make your Summer days go by quicker.
6. Volunteer. Although you don’t earn any money, volunteering at places such as the Franklin Food Pantry can not only be fun, but you have the opportunity to meet great new people and put another activity down on your college application!
7. Take a hike. There are so many local places to hike with your friends, some for less than $5! You get a good workout from it and a way to spend time with your friends productively!
8. Tour colleges. Regardless of whether you’re entering your sophomore or senior year, it is never too early to tour some colleges! It’s a great way to think about what’s next without doing too much school work.
9. Visit Boston! Boston is only a train ride away from Franklin, so invite your friends and walk the Freedom Trail or visit Chinatown!
10. Exercise. No need for a gym membership, you can easily download a free fitness app, watch fitness videos online, or sign up for FHS’ Strength and Conditioning Course!

Regardless of how much money you have or how many vacations you are taking, your Summer vacation can be filled with activities if you are willing to try!
