DECA States 2020

Nihara Lijan, Writer

Are you interested in business? Want to be an entrepreneur? Do you just want to try something new? Then DECA is just right for you!

What is DECA?

DECA stands for Distributive Education Clubs of America. It’s an organization that helps students enter the world of business and get to know more about it. Franklin’s DECA organization appeals to anybody who is interested in any field of business. In DECA, students either create a written project or compete in a role play. Both events require persistence and hard work. The topics for these projects vary from Finance to Entrepreneurship to Sports and Entertainment and more.

It is not an easy club, but if you put in the effort, then you will succeed and have fun as well!” said Mr. Carmo. Mr. Carmo teaches business and other subjects at FHS and runs DECA as well.

If you are interested, you can join the Google Classroom page using the following code: rvt6dtx. The club meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:10 and meetings can last until 3:10. The meetings are flexible and if you feel strong about your event plan, you can leave early. The first meeting will be Thursday, October 15 at 2:10. Freshman and sophomores are welcome from 2:15-2:45, and juniors and seniors can come from 2:45-3:15.

DECA Districts Day 1 2020

How is DECA going to work this year considering COVID and any other changes?

For starters, there is a new club advisor this year: Mr. Cadenhead. He has competed in DECA before and made it to Nationals twice! This year, DECA also created a mentoring program for younger students who are new or want extra help with their project. The mentor program is an organized leadership team who can help you prepare for your event at districts. Everybody competes at the district competition, then people who qualify compete in the state competition, and can even make it to nationals! Districts are going to be held in January and will take place online. States, however, are a little different. For states, the DECA organization is trying to create a hybrid schedule where some schools compete one day and others compete the next, so the dates aren’t officially finalized yet. Nationals are going to be held in California this year and haven’t been canceled.
