“The One That Got Away” from Katy Perry

Many celebrity relationships are sources of scrutiny, with the media circulating rumors of bad times for the couples, and usually media outlets blow circumstances out of proportion or even make a headline up.

However, this isn’t the case for Russell Brand and Katy Perry, who vacationed together separately over Christmas, both without wedding rings. On Friday, the British comedian filed for divorce, signing that it was “irreconcilable differences” that prompted him to end their one year marriage, as reported by TMZ.

The statement he released afterwards is as followed:

“Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I’ll always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.”

As reported by ABC News, the couple did not sign a prenuptial agreement to protect their assets when they married on October 23 2010. So by California state law, they will have to split their earnings fifty-fifty. Perry reportedly made $44 million this year, with Brand making only $15 million.

A month ago, Perry discussed her marriage with Barbara Walters of ABC News. “I think it’s lovely so far.”

She even hinted that she would probably have children with him, “I think that is one of the big reasons you get married.”

Similarly, Brand also talked with ABC News in March about his wife:

“[She] has given me much more strength in what I do. For a long while, what I do professionally was all that mattered to me really. Now I think, well, whatever I do, I’ll just go back to her, and that’s incredibly comforting.”

But sadly, these words no longer ring true. They first met on the set of “Get Him to the Greek” which Brand starred in. Perry had a cameo where she was a love interest to Brand’s character, but it was cut out of the final film.

They again crossed paths at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, where Perry performed and Brand hosted. After becoming a couple soon after, they announced their engagement in January of 2010. Finally in October later that year they tied the knot on India on a tiger reserve.

Neither of their reps had comments, and their twitters have been inactive. For Brand, he has the movie “Rock of Ages” coming up later this year, and Perry has her Grammy nominations to be excited about.

Fans of Katy Perry will most likely get another album in the near future, with possible breakup songs? Let’s hope that these two once unlikely love birds find happiness again.
