First Same-Sex Couple on Disney Channel

On January 26th Disney Channel featured its first same-sex couple on the show Good Luck Charlie.
Good Luck Charlie first aired in 2010 and is currently in its fourth season. The show is a about a family that is adjusting to their newest child.
In the most recent episode the mother and father of the Duncan’s invite one of 5 year old, Charlie Duncan’s, friends over for a playdate. When the friend arrives it is revealed that her parents are both women. Charlie’s father says, “Taylor has two moms?”, and his wife sarcastically replies, “Wow, nothing gets past you, Bob”.
According to the One Million Moms organization, a spokesperson for Disney Channel said, “This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors… Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness.”
“I think it’s a good thing for our society to see that it is being so widely accepted.. and it is about time Disney Channel does something about it” Julia DiMarino commented.
The episode is causing quite an uproar for viewers. Many parents are not okay with it and say that it is not appropriate for their children. Controversially, former Disney Channel star, Miley Cyrus, tweeted “I commend Disney Channel for making this step into the light of this generation. They control so much of what kids think! Life isn’t bright sets & wardrobes & kids becoming superstars! This is INSPIRING.”
