Grammys: Who Won What

Elizabeth Clark, Writer

The annual Grammy Awards were on Sunday night, and there were several people who won multiple awards, and several surprise winners. The actual show did not intrigue me, due to its length and amount of performances. However, I like looking into it the next day and finding out which of my favorite artists won. Below is a list of noteworthy winners.

Album of the Year

Kasey Musgraves: Golden Hour

  • This album is truly beautiful and a perfect and calm blend of pop and country music. From this album, Musgraves also won best solo performance for her song Butterflies and Best Country song went to Space Cowboy. However, every song from this album is amazing to listen to. I hadn’t heard this album until December, but now I basically have every song memorized. To listen click here

Best Country Duo/Group Performance

Dan and Shay: Tequila

  • We all know it, we all love it. Dan and Shay are definitely a rising country duo, and also have amazing other songs such as “Speechless”, “How not to” and “Keeping score”. This summer, they are performing with Florida Georgia Line at Xfinity Center on July 12!

Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rap/sung performance

Childish Gambino: This is America

  • This is the first rap song to win record of the year at the Grammys! Childish Gambino’s hits also include “Feels like Summer” and “3005”. This is America is incredibly powerful and a bop at the same time.

Best Rap Song

Drake: God’s Plan

Drake was once again incredibly popular in 2018, with other hits including “In my feelings” and “Nice for what”. If you did the Keke Challenge over the summer, thank Drake! If God’s Plan was stuck in your head for weeks, also thank Drake!

Best Rap Album

Cardi B: Invasion of Privacy

  • She was the first woman to win this category! With Cardi B, people either love her or they hate her, but nobody can say that they don’t know her songs. In this album, some popular songs include “I like it” and “Bodak Yellow”.

Best New Artist

Dua Lipa

  • Some of her popular songs include “New Rules” and “Be the One”. I didn’t think that I had heard “New Rules”, but upon listening to it it is easily recognizable and a fantastic song. Dua Lipa is sure to have several other hits in the coming years.

Best Pop Vocal Album

Sweetener: Ariana Grande

  • Ariana Grande is an incredibly popular pop artist, and her albums “Sweetener” and “Thank you Next” are hits. Some of her popular songs from Sweetener include “breathin” and “no tears left to cry”. Surprisingly, this was the first Grammy she’s received in her career, but she has been nominated several other times. On March 20th, she is performing at TD Garden if you want to hear her live!

Best R&B Album

H.E.R by H.E.R.

  • This wasn’t necessarily an album, nevertheless was a popular collection of songs! Some songs include “Could’ve Been” and “this way”. I have not heard of this group before today, however once listening to their songs I realized they are great!

Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Song was written for Visual Media

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper: Shallow

  • This was not at all a surprise for me, as I love “A Star is Born” and I find this duo amazing. Lady Gaga has always been a standout singer, but I hadn’t realized the extent of her vocal range until hearing this song. A Star is Born is also nominated at the Oscars for Best Picture! To hear it for yourself, click here. Lady Gaga also won best pop solo performance for her song “Joanne(Where Do You Think You’re Goin’)
