Nintendo’s latest game allows you to travel to an island paradise in the comfort of your own home.

On March 20 Nintendo released its newest game in the long-running Animal Crossing series — Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The game has been an unbelievable hit — Famitsu sales data in Japan reports it has sold over 2.6 million copies — but newcomers to the Animal Crossing universe are all wondering the same thing: what’s all the hype about?

According to Nintendo, the basis of the game is to escape to a deserted island and create your own paradise. The game is meant to be played over a long period of time so there are daily tasks that you can complete each day. These range from collecting fruit from the native fruit trees to gathering resources to make new tools and decorations.

One aspect of the game that long-time fans enjoy is the residents you gain in your town (or in this case island). Residents in the form of anthropomorphized animals will come and stay on your island. They become your virtual friends as you share gifts, ideas, and talk on a daily basis.

On top of your virtual friends, there is an online feature that allows you to visit your real-life friends’ islands. If you and a group of friends all have the game you can gather on each other’s islands. Some people online have even made videos of creative ways to play games when playing with each other such as musical chairs or tag.

The game is only available on the Nintendo switch so you will need to own or buy the console in order to play it. Luckily there are two versions of the switch with varying price points. You can buy the console at Target, Walmart, or Best Buy. The game itself costs $60 so beginning the gaming experience is surely an investment!

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the perfect quarantine game. According to The Verge its “the video game equivalent of a relaxing getaway”. While we might be stuck indoors for awhile, this game might just be the fun escape to another world we need.
