Super Bowl Ads: Favorites and Failures
February 9, 2021
There were exactly 57 official advertisements shown during Super Bowl LV! Some were winners. Others, well, were just plain terrible. In no particular order, here are five ads that impressed me … and five ads that made me cringe real hard (especially the last one)!
Winners
Winner: Uber Eats
Wayne’s World! Wayne’s World! Party Time! Excellent! Eat Local! Bringing back the iconic SNL characters was so funny. Plus, Cardi B stopped by!
Winner: State Farm

Having Jake from State Farm meeting his double, Drake from State Farm, was amusing and clever.
Winner: M&Ms
Making fun of gender reveal parties and having sympathy for nice people named Karen turned out hilarious. Plus, a Dan Levy cameo is a bonus.
Winner: General Motors

Will Ferrell, Kenan Thompson, and Awkwafina frantically going on a quest to Norway that does not go as planned? Interesting!
Winner: Rocket Mortgage
The top ranked advertisement starring comedian Tracy Morgan by the USA Today Ad Meter was deserving of its title. It is so stupid, yet so funny at the same time!
Losers
Loser: Cheetos

Bringing in Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher could not save this commercial. Shaggy’s insanely auto-tuned voice singing his one notable song “It Wasn’t Me” felt very cheesy (kind of fitting for a Cheetos ad, though).
Loser: Doritos
Flat Matthew McConaughey is nightmare fuel. Watching him expand inside of a vending machine made me feel uncomfortable.
Loser: Hellmann’s

Amy Schumer can be funny, but not when she’s playing the part of Hellmann’s Fairy Godmayo.
Loser: Paramount Plus
There were four advertisements during the big game for the rebranded version of CBS All Access. In other words, there were four too many attempts at making people want to buy another streaming service.
Loser: OATLY
I have no words to describe this at all.
Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed the best of the best and the worst of the worst!
