Met Gala 2021: Hits and Misses

I can’t even with the Met Gala. First of all, charging $30,000 for a single ticket makes me scratch my head and wonder why someone would pay that much to strut down a staircase and have a pathetic dinner (seriously, check out Keke Palmer’s pictures).

However, I am very amused by looking at all of the unique outfits that attempted to fit this year’s theme: American Independence. While some attendees understood the assignment, others failed completely and wore the worst outfits imaginable. Let’s take a look at my three favorite (and least favorite) looks from this year!

Huge Hits:

What a show-stopping outfit! (Dimitrios Kambouris)

Billie Eilish definitely captured the aesthetic of Old Hollywood with her gorgeous gown from Oscar de la Renta. In fact, she agreed to wear the dress only if the designer stopped using fur in its future products. What a power move.

Even the tiny purse goes well with Megan’s dress. (Theo Wargo)

Megan Thee Stallion showed off her style in a dazzling Coach dress, which took inspiration from Marilyn Monroe. The wavy fabric on the side and tiny gemstones all over her outfit stole the show for sure.

Just look at the beautiful flowers! (Don Braun)

Lili Reinhart had Christian Siriano, a former Project Runway contestant, design her fabulous outfit. He used the most stunning light pink fabric and included all 50 state flowers on her piece. Talk about capturing the theme perfectly!

Major Misses:

Best to keep her away from Harry Potter. (Theo Wargo)

Kim Kardashian should not be dressing up like a Dementor for such an occasion. Her all black outfit from Balenciaga is downright hideous and confusing. Pass.

“Neigh” translates to “no thanks”. (John Shearer)

Kim Petras, who I know absolutely nothing about, thought that wearing a horse head on her Collina Strada dress was a solid plan. Instead, it turned out to be quite the opposite. Its beady eyes just straight up scare me.

What on Earth is this? (Kevin Mazur)

Dixie D’Amelio wore some flimsy white gloves, a super plain black dress from Valentino, shoes that look like they were from the clearance section of Kohl’s, and the ugliest headpiece imaginable. Instead of resembling Audrey Hepburn’s character from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, she looked like Big Bird if he had a goth phase

Same energy, Dixie. Same energy. (Reddit)

Honorable mentions for some other fashion flops go to Lil Nas X as C-3PO, Frank Ocean and his terrifying green doll, and whatever Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello were going for

Everything about these looks feels off. (Evan Agostini)

Overall, it’s easy to say that this year’s Met Gala featured some of the most out-there fashion ever. Maybe next year someone will wear something even better… or worse!
