Recently there has been a rise in gun related violence, making many people believe that guns should be banned completely, and also leaving some gun owners very upset and giving them the thought that they are being ripped of their rights.

The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement act of 1994 addressed the ban of many semi-automatic firearms. A semi-automatic firearm is a gun that fires one shot every time the trigger is pulled.

In 2004, The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 expired due to a Sunset Provision. A Sunset Provision means that at some point the law will cease to have an effect unless further legislative action is taken to extend the law.

Ever since this bill expired, there has been many attempts to renew the ban, but no bill has been successful enough to reach the house floor.

Fully automatic weapons, guns that fire more than one bullet each time the trigger is pulled, as well as high capacity attachments were banned from purchase for all civilians in 1934 and again in 1986 due to the national firearms act and the Firearm Owners Protection act.

There was a total of 16 mass shootings in the United states last year.

• 3 In February, killing a total of 9 and injuring 20+
• 2 in March, killing 4 and injuring at least 12
• 2 in April, killing 10 and injuring 5
• 1 in May, killing 6
• 2 in July, of of them being the Movie theatre in Auora that killed 12
• 2 in August killing 9
• 1 in September killing 6 and injuring 3
• 1 in October, killing 3 and injuring 4
• And 2 in December with a toatal of 30 deaths

People Defending their right to bear arms are using the fact that they go through strict background checks to obtain their weapons, and it is thew 2nd amendment giving them the right to bear arms.

One of the two in December was at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown Connecticut.Sunset Provision.

This particular event took the lives of 20 children. 20 children who had their whole lives ahead of them

This shooting happened when the shooter got access to his mothers semi-auto machine gun.

To defend your rights, the right way, you should have strict regulations and a full background check every 6 months. As of now, the A.T.F (Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms) is only allowed to check in and regulate one time every 12 months, and on average they do about once every 15 years. amd they also have not had a full time leader for the past 6 years.

Both sides of this argument could easily win if the right action is taken. Not only should gun owners be constantly monitored, but they should make sure that they are the only ones able to access their weapons.

With strict regulations, and minimum access, the crime rate involving guns would drop drasticly and people would still be able to own weapons for the right reasons.
