Does Your Book Bag Feel Heavier Than You?

What are you carrying in that huge bag? With the school year just starting up, everyone is feeling the literal pain of the weight of heavy books. But what are the physical effects of the dead weight on your back? Experts say heavy book bags do more harm to your body than help to your brain.

“The pressure on your shoulders from the weight of a back can cause fatigue, muscle pain, and tiny muscle tears that can cause permanent damage” says Dr. Casden, a pediatrician, in an interview with teentribute.com. Because of the risks for physical damage, it is important to wear your backpack or book bag the proper way.

Here are some tips to avoid the pain:

  • Don’t put your bag on just one shoulder. It causes extra strain on that side of your body.
  • If you do use a pocket book or large messenger bag on one shoulder, be sure to switch the side of your body you put in on continuously, so you don’t cause stress to one side.
  • Put the heaviest and largest books closest to your body, so the weight isn’t pulling you off balance.
  • Most importantly, don’t wear your backpack below your waist. This causes unnecessary strain on your back, which can lead to permanent issues.

By following these tips, anyone should be able to bring home all the books they need for a long night of studying.
