PETA Slams New Super Mario Game

The creators of the newest Nintendo Super Mario game are slammed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, also known as PETA, in their latest accusations.

In the newest Super Mario game, Super Mario 3D Land, PETA claims that the Nintendo creators are sending the wrong message when Super Mario himself dons the skin of a tanooki. A tanooki is a Japanese raccoon dog that in real life is skinned alive for its fur. “By wearing a Tanooki, Mario is sending the message that it is OK to wear fur,” PETA’s website states.

Their latest advertisement shows Super Mario dressed in the skin of a tanooki, holding its head, and covered in its blood. Along with this new controversial advertisement, PETA followers have also been attacking fashion shows with red paint in which real fur is being modeled. It has also been said that PETA is recruiting models for their new campaign, “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur”.

This isn’t the first time Super Mario has appeared dressed as a tanooki. In 1988 Nintendo released Super Mario 3 in which Mario was first given the ability to transform into a tanooki. “Mario often takes the appearance of certain animals and objects in his games,” a Nintendo spokesman told Eurogamer in a statement. “These lighthearted and whimsical transformations give Mario different abilities and make his games fun to play. The different forms that Mario takes make no statement beyond the games themselves.”
