March is For Bisexual+ Health Awareness

March is For Bisexual+ Health Awareness

Olivia Baker, Writer

March is a month of many things in the US, primarily known for being the first month of spring and national women’s history. But what many don’t know is its also celebrated as Bisexual+ health awareness.

Founded by the Bisexual Resource Center (BRC), their goal is to raise awareness of the disparities of health in the Bi+ community (bi, pansexual, fluid, queer, etc.). Each year for the past eight  years the BRC selects a theme for the month. This year’s theme is Connection. With the theme of connection, the BRC and others who follow this month hope to connect more Bi+ people with one another and supportive communities.

Junior Franklin High School student Greyson Higgins, someone who identifies as bisexual themselves, says that they believe it’s important to raise awareness for the community because there’s a lot of noticeable stigma and bad stereotypes surrounding it. And that it’s unfair to the community to be cast aside because of who they like.

There are a couple ways you can show your support for the community this month, including donations to the Bisexual Resource center and the Visibility Impact fund. The BRC recommends these foundations themselves. But to Greyson the best way to show your support is to be open minded. To be open minded is to support everyone involved and be willing to learn about something.

So if you were not aware of what this month means to the Bi+ community, share it, support it. But most of all, be open minded to those involved.
