Franklin 66 Stoughton 61

On February 4th, the Franklin Boys Varsity Basketball team hung on to beat the Stoughton Black Knights at Franklin High School by 5 points.  This win improves the Boy’s Varsity record to 12 and 3.   The two teams first met back in December with Franklin winning that game in overtime. This match was also close as there was no double digit lead throughout the entire game.

The Panthers came out of the gates with high energy, taking quality shots and playing unselfishly. Although the Panthers looked solid, Stoughton hung on and didn’t blink. By halftime the score was close with Franklin up by 3, 31 to 28. The teams were neck and neck with one another throughout the third quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Black Knights gained some momentum, as shots began to fall for their perimeter players.  When the shots did not fall, Stoughton seemed to dominate the boards leading to many second shot opportunities.  With about 3 and a half minutes left in the game, Stoughton had a 6 point lead over Franklin, 57-51.

The Field House was packed for the final Friday night home game. Their team did not disappoint them. Instead of folding in over themselves, the Panthers fought back. They became more aggressive rebounding on the defensive end which limited Stoughton’s second shot opportunities. Senior Tim Garvey hit two three point shots. Senior Co-Captain Kyle Gibson made two layups including one in which he was fouled.  He made the free throw to tie the game at 57.  Kyle led all scorers with 25 points.

With the game tied, Tim Garvey hit another 3-pointer. This put Franklin ahead for good. From that point on, Stoughton had to foul in order to preserve time, and Franklin made the free throws to put the game away.

Their next game will be at King Philip on Monday, February 7th. Senior Night will be at home on Tuesday, February 15th.

In other basketball news, the JV and Freshman teams also defeated Stoughton on Friday night.
