Fantasy Newsmakers Season-in-review: David Ortiz

^^^(Personal video message from David Otiz himself)^^^

David Ortiz truly had a great year in 2013. After being part of one of the most dissapointing Red Sox teams in club history, Big Papi was ready for a bounceback season with the Sox. It was Ortiz’s notiriety combined with the Red Sox clinching a playoff birth that made our fantasy newsmaker team (Rocket Power) drop Michelle Obama and replace her with Big Papi in the celebrity spot. This would be one of the best decisions Rocket Power made all year.

In his first week with Rocket Power, David “Big Papi” OrtizĀ  made a solid contribution with 13 points. Ortiz and the Boston Red Sox faced off against the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Divisional Championship. The Red Sox would go on to defeat the Rays 3-1 in the series, and Ortiz came up big time in the second game of the series, slamming two home runs over the green monster against Rays ace David Price

With the Sox advancing to the ALCS (American League Championship Series) against the Detroit Tigers, Rocket Power would look for Ortiz’s name to surface in the news even more.

David Otiz had another solid week for Rocket Power as the Red Sox faced the Tigers in the ALCS. Ortiz hit a grand slam to tie game 2 which helped him make headlines.

Big Papi was solid in the Sox lineup while facing the quality pitching rotation of the Detriot Tigers. If the Red Sox continued to extend their season, Rocket Power had no doubt that Ortiz would bring us points one way or another. Fortunatelly, the Red Sox advanced to the World Series and Ortiz shined bright on the big stage.

David Ortiz had a great final week in fantsy newsmakers. Coming off a Wolrd Series win, MVP title, and more recently winning the Silver Slugger award (awarded to the best DH in baseball). Big Papi held on long enough to give Rocket Power some points by shaving his beard, winning multiple MLB awards, and appearing on night time entertainment such as David Letterman.

What I have yet to mention so far is how David Ortiz managed to unite the city of Boston after the terrible marathon bombing tragedy. Ortiz not only led with his play on the field (adopting a team first attitude and becomming one of the bearded brethren) but he also gave an emotional speech, claiming that “this [Boston] is our f****** city” andĀ  praising the city of Boston for it’s courage through such a terrible event.

Overall Ortiz was a great newsmaker for Rocket Power. His play on and off the fieled garnered national media attention and I have no doubt that as long as the Red Sox stay relevant in Major League Baseball, Ortiz will be a newsmaker.
