A Look into the FHS Swim Team

A Look into the FHS Swim Team

Elizabeth Leo, Writer

Yes, there is a swim team at Franklin High and a lot of people actually don’t know about it. Helen Huang and Heather McCarthy are two students, out of the approximate 50, on the swim team who had a lot to say about the team as a whole and the dynamic. Overall, they talked about what the team is and what it’s all about.

When asked what the team is like, McCarthy said: “The team is both outgoing and welcoming. Team members are encouraging at meets and everyone has friends to laugh with at practice.” The team is a collective group of student-athletes that swim for enjoyment, and not just to win.

But the team is pretty commendable this season. Huang touched on this point: “The team is in great shape this year. We have a lot of really strong swimmers and hard workers on our team. Every year we are also able to send several people and relay teams to sectionals and states, where we do quite well.”

Huang had a passion for swimming and decided to join the team in her freshman year. She noted: “After hearing about how close everyone on the swim team was, I knew that it was definitely something I wanted to try. I was immediately welcomed onto the team during the first day of tryouts and felt a sense of belonging. Joining the swim team was one of the best decisions I have ever made.”

McCarthy joined the team this year and added: “I like the team because I love being a part of a sport where everyone is supportive and you all rely on each other to improve.” The team, overall, seems like a great experience. Swimming is really a lifelong exercise and to perform with friends is even twice the occurrence.

The swim team is a really bonded team at FHS and is really worth joining. It gives experience in swimming but also friendships. For any further information, you can follow the team on twitter @FHSVarsitySwim.
