FROM FRANKLIN TO BERLIN

October 15, 2018

The Franklin School Committee recently announced the approval of a trip for FHS to go abroad from June 23-July 3, 2019 but what exactly does this entail?

To find out more details, I spoke to Superintendent Ahern about the trip’s approval and to Mr. McCarthy (one of the trip’s organizers) about its future. To get passed, it first had to get preliminary approval from Mr. Peri, than from Superintendent Ahern, and finally to the school committee with the contingencies it would be an extended field trip, and the students in attendance would be safe, and would learn something beneficial.

This trip will be open to all students at FHS in 2019-2020, excluding incoming freshman (Class of 2023), and would cost around $3,500 (not including spending money). We will be traveling to Berlin, Prague, Krakow, and Budapest, with a day trip to Auschwitz.

In the past, FHS has traveled to China, which though an unforgettable experience for those in attendance, this trip will be closer and easier to manage, making it a great first trip for many students. Along these same lines, it would be a shorter duration than a typical college study abroad program, and one would have less independence, as they would be lead by a tour group and experts in their field.

However, because it is a shorter trip, FHS students will be exposed to the most important things each area offers. It also includes curricular connections to many of the history courses at FHS, including World History (the Holocaust), USII (Cold War) and AP European History.

There has been a very large response to this trip but there is limited space still available. If interested, join the Google Classroom. (Code=c89363l)
