New Movies Coming This Christmas

Grace Tucceri, Writer

‘Tis the season to be streaming … movies that aren’t holiday related? That’s right! On December 25, some of the most buzzworthy flicks will be available to watch from the comfort of your couch. Disney+, HBO Max, and Netflix will each be releasing a new hit film this Christmas (although calling Netflix’s new movie a hit may be a little premature)! Check out the summaries and trailers below if you are looking for something to watch over break!

Soul (Disney+): Pixar’s newest animated family film will venture into new territory for the studio by exploring the concept of what makes a person themselves. Soul is centered around Joe Gardner (the talented Jamie Foxx), a middle school band teacher who dreams of being a professional jazz performer. Unfortunately, while en route to his first gig, a tragic accident occurs. Joe soon finds himself in “the Great Beyond”, a place where souls are developed before being sent off to Earth. Along the way he bumps into 22 (comedian Tina Fey), a soul who is content with being trapped in the Great Beyond. Will Joe get back to Earth before his body dies? Find out on December 25th!

Wonder Woman 1984 (HBO Max): If you were a fan of the 2017 box office hit starring Gal Gadot, chances are that you are somewhat interested in what happens next for Diana Prince. Wonder Woman 1984 takes place in, you guessed it, 1984 and follows the fierce Amazon warrior as she navigates numerous challenges during the Cold War. She comes face-to-face with an evil businessman named Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal, star of The Mandalorian) and meets a skilled archaeologist named Barbara Ann Minerva (Kristen Wiig) who might have a secret. Along the way, she faces many foes while searching for her true love, Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), who is presumably dead following the events of the first movie. Who knows what else is in store for the characters!

We Can Be Heroes (Netflix): Did anyone ask for a standalone sequel to the notorious flop The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D? Absolutely not, but apparently this is what the film industry in 2020 has stooped to. We Can Be Heroes is about the next generation of superheroes who have to rescue their parents (Sharkboy and Lavagirl all grown up)… who have been kidnapped by aliens! Somehow, Priyanka Chopra is in this low budget movie, which absolutely confuses me. But that’s not all! Pedro Pascal ended up in this too, which is interesting considering how busy he is in Hollywood. Are the visual effects horrible and does the plot seem wicked thin? Absolutely. This is coming from the creator of Spy Kids movies after all. However, does this seem like a great distraction for your younger siblings? You bet your flying sharks it does.

So, season’s streamings and be sure to get your popcorn ready!
